Background
What the numbers mean
Interpreter time is more than the exam
A qualified interpreter needs a pre-brief with the examiner before the appointment and a debrief after. For a 60-minute exam, budget 85 minutes of interpreter time. For a 90-minute psychiatric exam, that rises to nearly two hours. Book the interpreter for the full block, not just the exam slot.
Breaks reduce net exam time
When an examinee needs seating breaks, the scheduled duration stays the same but the usable time drops. A 60-minute exam with two 10-minute breaks leaves only 40 minutes for the assessment. If the exam format needs a full 60 minutes of face time, extend the scheduled duration and tell the referral source why.
The room checklist prevents last-minute problems
A low-stimulation room is not the same as a quiet room. It means controlling light, noise, and traffic flow. A service animal is not a pet and the clinic must not treat it as one. The checklist turns vague accommodation requests into specific actions the clinic staff can follow.
FAQ
Questions people ask
How much interpreter time should I book?
The planner adds 15 minutes for a pre-brief and 10 minutes for a debrief to the exam duration. Book the interpreter for the total. Some jurisdictions require a certified interpreter; check your local rules.
What if the examinee needs more frequent breaks?
The planner uses a 30-minute interval. If the examinee needs breaks every 15 minutes, note that separately in the booking email. The net exam time will be lower and you may need to extend the scheduled appointment.
Does the planner cover sign-language interpreters?
It covers the time calculation and checklist. Booking a sign-language interpreter may require more lead time than a spoken-language interpreter, and the pre-brief format differs. Add those details to the booking email.
What does 'plain-language materials' mean?
It means rewriting consent forms, intake questionnaires, and information sheets in simple sentences at a Grade 6 reading level. Some examinees have limited literacy or cognitive limitations and cannot understand standard legal forms.
